Pat Summerall
Realizing the impact this giant in the broadcasting industry had on others, with the blessing of both Pat and Cheri Summerall, The Pat Summerall Award was created by Cheryl DeLeonardis and a new tradition during Super Bowl would be set. The award was created to honor a national broadcaster or prominent sports personality who embody the characteristics Pat Summerall wanted the award to represent – an individual who has had an outstanding career and who has made a significant impact in their community.
Commencing at Super Bowl XL in Detroit in 2006, Pat Summerall personally chose the honoree and presented the award in person annually during Super Bowl weekend until his death in 2013. Even though we have lost our beloved namesake of this coveted award, Pat's unparalleled legacy will live on through this prestigious event.
The Legends for Charity® dinner is a national event held during the biggest weekend in professional sports and has made St. Jude Children's Research Hospital® the official charity partner over the past 19 years. The event began as a luncheon but has grown into one of the biggest charity dinners held during Super Bowl Weekend. The Legends dinner has raised over $13 million for the kids of St. Jude. This dinner has introduced the sports broadcasting world and many NFL players to the mission of St. Jude, and their mission is clear: Finding Cures. Saving Children. Everywhere.® After hosting the dinner for several years, Rich Eisen chose to turn his annual Run Rich Run into a charitable event, naming St. Jude as the beneficiary.
